Keeping lake levels low in the dry winter to allow for heavy rainfall in the rainy season is a controversial proposal with as many critics as supporters.
U.S. Rep. Brian Mast pushed a proposal to prevent toxic blue-green algae from polluting the Saint Lucia River, Indian River and Atlantic Ocean as the Army Corps of Engineers diverts excess lake water through the C-44 Canal.
Rising Waters In Lake Okeechobee Trigger Concerns Of Dike Safety
Lake Okeechobee Anglers, a non-profit organization that supports lake anglers and fishing guides, believes a 10.5-foot elevation would endanger the health of the lake and those who depend on it.
On Tuesday, the lake level was 11.23 feet. On the same day in 2007, it was 9.42 feet. As of July 2, 2007, the lake bottom will reach 8.82 feet, the lowest mark since the Herbert Hoover Dam was built in the early 1930s.
"Deeper lakes are dirtier lakes, and deeper lakes increase the potential for harmful runoff into estuaries," Mast wrote on Facebook. "I hope everyone involved will come to tonight's meeting with an open mind, realizing that continuing the failed state of destruction of estuaries and the health of millions of people is not the answer."

Mast also accused "special interest groups" who he said "hijacked this meeting to push their agenda," posting statements such as: "This is not a crisis created by Mother Nature, it is an unnecessary crisis created by man. To avoid."

Mr. Mast said, "The words of the agitator like this are very useful. "All water users are still getting their water. And we are in a better position than we were last year to avoid dangerous spills, which, on the other hand, are "absolutely avoidable man-made crises.'' "
