LOS ANGELES - The coronavirus pandemic has not slowed federal authorities in Los Angeles from actively working to find thousands of illegal machine gun conversion kits imported into the United States from other countries.

The converters, often referred to as 'Glock converter switches', are smaller than the size of a coin, but can turn a Glock pistol into a fully automatic weapon.

Agents from the ATF, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives, are concerned that these devices could end up in the hands of criminals, especially at a time when gun sales are increasing.

"It's a piece of metal, actually three pieces. They put it in the back of the slide here and converted this firearm into a fully automatic firearm," said Stephen Galloway, assistant special agent for the ATF in Los Angeles. "If you had a high-capacity magazine, you'd get about 30 rounds dropped or fired at one time."

Galloway said the ATF tracked shipments of these devices from overseas, but some were actually made here in Southern California.

"We've seen cases here in LA where these are manufactured at home or in a machine shop," Galloway said.

Red Rifle gun shop owner Jack Brandhorst has never handled a switch, but can take a gun apart in seconds and show us exactly how to install it.

"I can't speak for what people think. We get a lot of customers here who want things that people don't have - they see it in the movies. They want to do the bad Mamajama thing on the block, but it's serious and it is also very dangerous," said Branhorst.

Brandhorst said that he never had customers ask him about these converters, which work only on Glock-brand weapons, but some were curious about fully automatic weapons.

"I had idiots asking how to turn a shotgun into a full car, which I sent them on their merry way," Brandhorst said.

"It's scary speaking from the perspective of a former street officer who knows someone can have a machine gun and I don't have the firepower to compete with it," Galloway said.

Galloway added that in one of the ATF cases, they identified 4,000 smuggled converter switches in the United States and were able to recover more than 3,000 of them. But hundreds of these shipments are still out there somewhere and were made by other manufacturers.

"These are dangerous and we're doing everything we can to get them off the streets," Galloway said. SHREVPORT, La. () - Agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) New Orleans Field Division. was in Shreveport Tuesday to demonstrate a simple device that turns conventional semi-automatic Glock pistols into fully automatic weapons.

More Than 500 Glock Switches Intercepted In Tennessee

Shreveport police officials say they are seeing the device being used more and more frequently in shootings across the city. The ATF says the Glock switch is an illegal device classified as a machine gun under federal law.

The Glock is one of the most popular handguns in the United States. Now people surf the dark web, use 3D printers, or sometimes they just search on sites like Etsy to buy a small size plate called a Glock Switch, which can convert a Glock into a fully functional car, but illegally. Weapons

The Glock switch makes it possible for the gun to fire about 15 rounds in less than a second. With an extended clip in the same Glock, one could potentially fire 30 rounds in less than three seconds.

Officials say what makes the Glock switch so dangerous is the weapon's modified rate of fire and its inaccuracy. Even trained ATF agents struggle to lower the Glock's coil when firing with a switch.
