Oklahoma Military Department - The Oklahoma Army National Guard is part of the Oklahoma Army National Guard. The Commanding General of the Oklahoma National Guard is the Governor of Oklahoma, who appoints the state's Adjutant General (TAG), a Major Jeral from either the Army or the Air Force. Currently, TAG Brig. Mr. Thomas H. Mancino.
The history of the Air Force OK ARNG SOF "Lords of Darkness" is complex. The first aviation units in the OK ARNG appear to have included the 245th Medical Company (Air Ambulance) and the 145th Airlift Company (1968), seemingly merged into the 445th Airlift Company (1971); The 445th Aviation Company was reorganized as B Company, 149th Aviation Battalion (Sep 1978); and in May 1982 the 45th Aviation Battalion (Light Combat Helicopter) was organized as part of the Special Operations Forces. Organizational Management No. 168-87 (05/08/1987) on 01/10/1987 reorganized the 45th Aviation Battalion into the 1st Battalion of the 245th Airborne Army.
Oklahoma Military Department
On 5 August 1987, the 245th Airlift Wing was established as part of the Oklahoma Army National Guard, part of the United States Army System. It was organized on 1 October 1987 to consist of the 1st Battalion (Special Operations) (Airborne) at Sperry. The 1st Battalion redeployed to Tulsa on 1 July 1989. In 1986-87, the OK ARNG competed for acceptance as a Special Aviation Team member from the Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg and the active duty Army 160th Special Aviation Regiment operations. .

At some point, the 1st Battalion, 245th Airlift (Special Operations) was reorganized as the 1st Battalion (Airport Operations), 245th Airlift. In January 2016, the unit was preparing to deploy to the Middle East; at that time, pre-deployment training was scheduled for May-June 2016 at Camp Gruber State Training Center.
In 2021, soldiers from the Oklahoma National Guard and Airm helped distribute food and water to citizens affected by Hurricane Ida.
