LOS ANGELES - The coronavirus outbreak hasn't stopped federal authorities in Los Angeles from working hard to track down thousands of illegal machine gun conversion kits that have been imported into the United States from other countries.

Agents from the ATF, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives, are concerned that this device could end up in the hands of criminals, especially at a time when gun sales are on the rise.

Galloway says the ATF is tracking shipments of these devices from overseas, some of which are even manufactured here in Southern California.

"We've seen cases here in LA where this is made at home or in a machine shop," Galloway said.

Jack Brandhorst, owner of Red Rifle Gun Shop, has never used a switch but can remove a gun in seconds and showed us exactly how someone installs one.

"I can't speak for what people are thinking. We get a lot of customers here who want things that people don't have - they see it in the movies. They want to be that bad mamajama on the block, but it's serious and also very dangerous," Brandhorst said.

Brandhorst said he's never had any customers ask him about this parameter, which only works on Glock pistols, but some have been curious about automatic weapons.
